HOUSTON (Reuters) – Royal Dutch Shell Plc RDSa.L plans to cut production on the heavy oil hydrocracker in half at its 227,586 barrel per day (bpd) Convent, Louisiana, refinery for a month beginning in October, said sources familiar with plant operations.
The 45,000 bpd hydrocracker, called the H-Oil Unit, will run on only one production train while a vacuum distillation unit (VDU) bypass is underway, the sources said.
The H-Oil Unit, unlike most hydrocrackers, processes residual crude oil from the VDU under high heat and pressure in the presence of hydrogen and a catalyst to make motor fuels, primarily diesel. Most hydrocracking units process gas oil.
