TAMPA, Fla. — It’s been several weeks since the Biden administration announced a new program to help immigrants in four countries, and organizations are seeing the impact of the announcement.
Catholic Charities is one organization in Tampa that is helping answer questions for those who may not know how to apply.
Gina Joseph received help from Catholic Charities 25 years ago when she came to the U.S. from Haiti. Now she’s seeking help to bring her family to the U.S.
"It’s a chance and maybe I’ll take my chance and come to the Catholic Charities and apply," she said.
The plan announced by the Biden administration is helping 30,000 immigrants from four countries come to the U.S. legally.
Joseph says this is the perfect time to take advantage of the help.
“That’s a good opportunity for me, for Haiti, my mom, people I haven’t seen for years," she said.
The last time she visited Haiti was nearly a decade ago. It’s time that she treasures, saying she used to go every Easter because it is her favorite holiday.
She hopes that by applying to this program, she’ll be one step closer to being reunited with her loved ones.
“My mom, she’s getting older. She never had a chance to see her grandchildren, they miss her," Joseph said.
Catholic Charities immigration services are helping people like Joseph to apply online.
Jose Fernandez says it all starts with a sponsor.
“The sponsor has to have enough income to be able to sponsor the client and to be able to support them when they come into the United States," he said.
Joseph said the countless calls to her family will all be worth it. She even encourages others to apply.
Meanwhile, Catholic Charities will continue to answer questions and help guide people through the program.
